Location

Student Travel Grants

All students whose submissions are selected to participate will receive a travel grant of up to $500, depending on need and eligibility, to help with travel and hotel costs.

Overview

SIGACT is pleased to announce the first Symposium on Theory of Computing (STOC) ACM Student Research Competition (SRC) sponsored by Microsoft Research. The STOC SRC offers an opportunity for undergraduate students conducting theoretical computer science research to present their original work at STOC 2007. Research in all areas of theoretical computer science is welcome. A typical but not exclusive list of topics include:

• algorithms and data structures
• computational complexity
• cryptography
• computational geometry
• algorithmic graph theory and combinatorics
• randomness in computing
• parallel and distributed computation
• machine learning
• applications of logic
• algorithmic algebra and coding theory
• computational science and economics
• quantum computing
• theoretical aspects of areas such as databases, information retrieval, and networks.

Competition

The STOC SRC is only open to undergraduates. It consists of a submission round followed by two rounds of judging. We expect to select 10-15 submissions for acceptance to the poster session.

Submissions

Format:   Submissions should be extended abstracts describing recently completed or ongoing original, student-driven research. We take this to mean:

• The student derives/produces/discovers the salient results; but
• The advisor may guide the journey toward those results. That is, point the student toward relevant techniques and papers, offer some insight where appropriate, and discuss the problem in substantive ways.

Unfortunately, group submissions will not be accepted; each entry must be from a single individual. Papers should begin with a cover page including title, author name, affiliation, email address and the name and email address of a faculty sponsor. A one or two paragraph abstract should also appear on the cover page. The extended abstracts should not exceed 2 pages (excluding bibliography and cover page) and be typeset with at least 10 point font in single column format on 8.5 x 11 inch paper with at least 1 inch margins.

Simultaneous submissions:  Research previously published in another conference proceedings or journal, or which is scheduled for publication prior to July 2007, will not be considered for acceptance at the STOC SRC. However, we do not consider work appearing at the SRC ineligible for publication in other venues.

Student status:  Students may only submit work that was completed as an undergraduate. To ensure this, students must currently be enrolled as an undergraduate at an institution of higher learning. The faculty sponsor should be able to verify such a status. More information is available on the ACM SRC participation requirements page.

Poster Session

The conference competition begins with a poster presentation where students discuss their results with a panel of judges and conference attendees. 4-5 student finalists are chosen to give oral presentations the following morning at a special conference session.

Oral Presentations

The final round of conference judging consists of a 10 minute talk followed by 5 minutes of questions. The top three finishers receive prizes of $500, $300, and $200 (USD) respectively. In addition, the top three finishers of the STOC SRC advances to the yearly ACM SRC Grand Finals (judged in an online competition), whose winners will be honored at the ACM Awards Banquet.
